Hasta 1910 los estudios universitarios estuvieron vedados a las mujeres, y hubo que esperar hasta 1929 para encontrar a la primera ingeniera, doña Pilar Careaga y Basabe, y a la primera arquitecta, doña Matilde Ucelay Maortúa (1930), egresadas de las Escuelas de la UPM. Han pasado largos años desde entonces, pero las féminas siguen sin tener una presencia al menos igualitaria en las disciplinas STEM.
También podemos apreciar este desfase en los equipos directivos de las universidades. No obstante, la ETSIDI cuenta en su haber con tres excelentes catedráticas que han llevado las riendas de la Escuela de manera ejemplar: doña María Consolación Reinoso Gómez (1986), doña Sara Gómez Martin (2008-2012) y, nuestra actual directora, doña Isabel Carrillo Ramiro (2021-).
Inducidas por la educación y los estereotipos sociales, las jovencitas han desarrollado una percepción de sí mismas que las lleva a minusvalorar su capacidad para embarcarse en las asignaturas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. Los expertos señalan que se puede revertir esa situación mediante la Educación, y dándoles a conocer modelos femeninos de éxito en estos campos del saber – como sucede con el Premio iDanae a la mujer con excelente carrera profesional STEM-, así como las salidas profesionales a las que podrán optar en un futuro. Resulta ciertamente importante incentivar la mejora del rendimiento matemático en los primeros cursos del sistema escolar.
