THE SEVEN WONDERS

| Sin comentarios

What we are as human beings is the result of the legacy that we have left our forefathers over the centuries. Our culture, ideology, customs and way of life have been constructed during the history of mankind.

The cultural legacy we have inherited from our ancestors have left their footprints in the different manifestations that have survived the passage of time as works of art, monuments, buildings … that invite us to remember that for the same soil tread took years, centuries and even millennia ago civilizations that have helped shape our identity, but…

What monumental legacy will remain of our civilization?

If we think of ancient monuments and buildings that have come down to us what might be the wonders of the modern world that could "compete" with the wonders of the ancient world?

In the middle Ages the final list of what is now known as the Seven Wonders of the World list was formed and consists of:

  • The Great Pyramid of Giza.
  • The Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
  • The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
  • The Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
  • The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
  • The Colossus of Rhodes.
  • The Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Because of all these buildings, except the Great Pyramid, have been destroyed for different reasons throughout history, in 1999 the Swiss Bernard Weber launched a project to choose, by universal vote via Internet and phone messages, the new seven wonders of the world, among numerous candidates constructions that should have been raised before 2000. Thus, the July 7, 2007 were announced the seven winners:

  • La Great Wall of China.
  • Petra (Jordan).
  • El Christ the Redeemer (Brazil).
  • Machu Picchu (Peru).
  • Chichén Itza (Mexico).
  • El Coliseum in Rome (Italy).
  • Taj Mahal (India).

It is true that the draft Weber took a lot of criticism, first by UNESCO withdrew its support because they felt that this was a project personally, that there was a universal, because those without access Internet could not participate, especially because the criteria for choosing the candidates are not scientific or educational. It also received criticism for the purposes for which were intended benefits of voting, although it was shown that would be used to preserve the monuments. Some experts in art and archeology screamed to the sky because it was an idea that encouraged competition between buildings, and to compare buildings from different eras and civilizations neither sense nor the fact that voters were people without knowledge of art, archeology and architecture. In light of the latest list, it is curious to see how all selected buildings, except the Cristo Redentor, were built before the twentieth century, so we can consider heritage of past civilizations, however, a question inevitably arises…

What modern buildings can be seen in the distant future, the wonders of our time?

It is noteworthy that in the civilization of technology, of the large buildings built for a purpose, usually looking for private economic benefits, we see projects like the Taj Mahal, for example, built to honor the deceased wife of a king's palace.

The answer to the question is impossible to know, but there is a bet that is easy not fail, as CN Tower skyscraper, the Burj Al Arab, the Empire State or the Petronas Twin Towers, no doubt, will star alongside the buildings in which its creators try to capture modernity and break with classical and traditional as the Sydney Opera House, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Sagrada Familia. We can’t forget constructions undoubtedly are great symbols representing our time such as the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate, the Eiffel Tower, the London Eye or the Panathenaic Stadium.

We live in a time when past and present merge to build the future and the legacy we leave to our descendants, and no better way to ensure that our legacy is worthy representation of our time admiring, enjoying, appreciating and caring what We have inherited from past civilizations and, because we are what our ancestors for centuries have been built.
