MOOC: “Introduction to Personal Branding” learning outcomes

The MOOC course “Introduction to Personal Branding” (Coursera) emphasizes the importance of personal branding, emphasizing its role in showcasing individual talents and gifts to the world. The metaphor of a party emphasizes the idea that planning ahead of time is critical for achieving our goals and that self-promotion is necessary for others to recognize and appreciate one’s unique abilities.

While developing a personal brand can help distinguish individuals and establish a reputation, the emphasis is not solely on self-promotion. Instead, the emphasis is on raising awareness about one’s unique contributions to the world and contributing to a supportive community.

The Course  offers practical advice for building an engaging personal brand, including the importance of focus, authenticity, storytelling, and creating a positive impact. It acknowledges the role of failure in the learning process and encourages individuals to align their personal lives with their brand for authenticity.

The challenges and pitfalls of personal branding in the digital age are also addressed. The material emphasizes the need for careful consideration before establishing a social media presence, advocating for a commitment to being a role model or mentor rather than focusing solely on self-promotion.

The  course touches on the level of personalization in a personal brand, acknowledging the challenge of separating personal and professional aspects completely. It emphasizes the value of authenticity and encourages individuals to determine the appropriate level of personalization for them.

The course also emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, recognizing one’s personality type, and making informed decisions about the type of work one pursues, as well as providing recommended assessments, such as Myers-Briggs, for understanding oneself and developing a personal brand. I took one of these tests and was surprised by how accurately it described some of my main characteristics.

One of the recommendations I found very useful was to choose three guiding words for a personal brand as a way to emphasize a critical step in forming the foundation of a mission statement, and how the exemplification of these guiding words in our personal branding is critical. This demonstrates the significance of brand authenticity and consistency.

For those who are not active content creators but would like to participate more in communities of knowledge and practice on circular economy issues, the course has helped me prioritize my preferred social media platform, which is included in my final PLE. Also the course have gave me ideas on how to define the key elements of personal branding: three words, mission statement, and photo.

Finally, I find it interesting that the course advises viewers to operate under the assumption that there is no privacy online and emphasizes the importance of selective sharing and authenticity.

The course taught me that personal branding in the digital age is a multifaceted journey that requires self-awareness, authenticity, strategic planning, and continuous adaptation. It is not merely about self-promotion but also about contributing to a supportive community of learners, practitioners, and others. The insights provided in the material underscore the need for a thoughtful and intentional approach to personal branding in the dynamic and socially connected world of today.

PERSONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Hello!!!

I would like to present my preliminary personal learning environment, comprising a diverse set of tools organized into four distinct groups, as follows: Search & research, Communication & networking, Learning & writing, and Organization & storage tools.

Subsequent to acquiring additional tools, I enhanced my ability to adeptly manage both time and projects. This development prompted a reevaluation and refinement of my personal learning environment. During this process, I successfully regrouped and reorganized my tools, aiming for a more cohesive representation of my learning ecosystem.

Notably, the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) group now boasts a more diverse array of tools, meticulously regrouped to delineate their respective functionalities and applications, thereby contributing to an enriched and well-structured learning environment.

Pesronal Learning Environment

Here is the first version of my PLE. I decided to separate in 4 main sections: Communication, Management, Learning, Creation. Having very different uses in these categories I added subsections for better readability.

In terms of communication, I think everything is quite common and well known, messenger apps such as whatsapp for unformal communication, webmail for formal ones and usual videoconference tools like zoom.

In my learning experience, I realize I need to develop more tools as I mainly rely on Google to provide me information sources although I tend to use Google Scholar more and more. In addition to the specific school websites and moodle, I also learn spontaneously information on other means such as youtube, linkedin, the different Eit Web Pages or the EU Raw Material Information System that I consult often about different raw material, this subcategory is half way in the Creation section I called it inspiration.

When it comes to creation I think the tools I used are quite common and probably offer much more capacities than the ones I use (i.e. Word, PPT, Canva,…). For the ones that don’t know it, I use the LaTeX format on Overleaf (it’s a s a high-quality typesetting system) for most my written report and Canva for slide shows or video editing for a better visual.

Finally, I classified apps in a management category, it is mostly the specific software I use (Matlab, Excel, OpenLCA) along with the organisation and storage apps.

After learning about new applications sites and software from my peers I’ve updated my PLE.

Communication: I was quite happy with the various means of communication I use maybe I should simply rationalize them.

Management: Two apps can be added to my management list: dropbox as I realize I will need extra reliable storage space online and Gannt Chart (project scheduling) that I knew before but too rarely use in projects.

Learning: As I needed more sources for my research, I will start using Research Gate to diversify the information I find, Refworks and Zotero to manage my sources as I relied on LaTeX to do it before.

Creation: on the creative side of things I started using Pocket to increase and save the online content I read as source of inspiration and research and Looka to generate logos.

Majd MUSTAFA’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE)

Hi everyone,

Here is my initial personal learning environment (Fig. 1) which consists of the following categories: learning, research, creating & editing, organization & storage, and communication. Additionally, I added the “to develop” category to put all the tools that I had not thought of before after checking out my colleagues’ PLEs.

Fig. 1: Initial Personal Learning Environment

After thinking about the areas to improve in my PLE, I figured out that I miss networking tools that are very useful for expanding my network and growing academically and professionally. Also, using language tools like Grammarly is very helpful when writing reports, emails, or even in daily communication. Furthermore, CamScanner is essential for me as a university student because I usually share notes with my colleagues. Likewise, I added many tools in almost all categories, see Fig. 2.

Finally, there are more things that can be added to my PLE in the future, but for now, it is enough to master the tools I have and try to develop and learn gradually.
