Majd MUSTAFA’s MOOC I completion

The personal branding course has been very informative as it helped me to develop a better understanding of a solid personal brand. I mostly enjoyed learning how to separate personal life from professional life on social networks, which is really important when dealing with a large audience. For example, I usually post some guitar-playing videos on YouTube but this has nothing to do with my academic and professional life. So, having the knowledge to choose the right platform to share my thoughts is very useful. Besides, I learned about the 80/20 rule which is excellent for sustaining the development of my personal brand rather than posting stuff for entertainment.

Another idea that triggered me is that I have always felt ashamed of posting my career development on social networks because not everyone has the opportunity to achieve such things. However, how should I expect people to appreciate my skills without sharing them?

As for my PLE, I thought LinkedIn was the only platform for professional networking, but from now on I will start using Twitter to share and exchange professional thoughts to grow my network.

Ultimately, this course was insightful and full of ideas that made me see things from a different point of view, develop my skills, and understand myself.

Majd MUSTAFA’s Personal Learning Environment (PLE)

Hi everyone,

Here is my initial personal learning environment (Fig. 1) which consists of the following categories: learning, research, creating & editing, organization & storage, and communication. Additionally, I added the “to develop” category to put all the tools that I had not thought of before after checking out my colleagues’ PLEs.

Fig. 1: Initial Personal Learning Environment

After thinking about the areas to improve in my PLE, I figured out that I miss networking tools that are very useful for expanding my network and growing academically and professionally. Also, using language tools like Grammarly is very helpful when writing reports, emails, or even in daily communication. Furthermore, CamScanner is essential for me as a university student because I usually share notes with my colleagues. Likewise, I added many tools in almost all categories, see Fig. 2.

Finally, there are more things that can be added to my PLE in the future, but for now, it is enough to master the tools I have and try to develop and learn gradually.

Majd MUSTAFA’s Personal reflection on the professional future

Reflecting on my future professional life is something changeable and updated over time. Generally, no matter what career I am going to pursue, I will definitely stick to Research and Development (R&D) either in industry or research centers.

I am highly motivated to pursue research related to SDGs, mainly topics about the environment and Materials Science. Thus, I started my master’s degree in the Advanced Materials and Innovative Recycling (AMIR) program at Bordeaux University in 2022, where I learned about LCA, materials synthesis and characterization, eco-design, batteries recycling, and nanoscience, among others.

In the future, I am planning to pursue my academic journey by doing a PhD upon completing my master’s program. Then, I am committed to contributing to the R&D in Europe and being part of the Green Deal by 2050.

Majd MUSTAFA – Personal Presentation

Hello everyone! I’m Majd MUSTAFA, 27 years old from Syria.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Metals Engineering from Al-Baath University, Syria.

Curious and focused. These two traits always motivate me to be a change-maker. After translating a TED talk on curbing climate change given by Jens Burchardt, BCG’s global expert on climate impact, I decided to join the AMIR master’s program which in heart combines the vision of innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

As an avid advocate of SDGs, I participated in several events organized by the EIT RawMaterials like Label StartUp 2023 in Brussels, Raw & Circular Economy Expedition (RACE) 2023 in Spain and Portugal, and Debate Role Game – EELISA in Bordeaux. At each event, I had to work with a different team including students from all over the world which honed my soft and hard skills.

I envision pursuing a Ph.D. after completing my master’s degree since I want to be more than an observer in the materials universe, I would like to discover and overcome our century’s challenges. I am a hard worker, eager to research and learn, and fully invested in becoming a major player in the future of Materials Science.

In my free time, I play guitar and do voluntary activities such as Translating TED Talks (English-Arabic) and mentoring students in the Syrian Youth Empowerment (SYE) initiative.
