After attending Coursera’s “Personal Branding”

Coursera’s “Personal Branding” course helped me greatly to systematically develop PLE and Digital Identity Plan. Through this course, I learned to clearly know my strengths, passion, and values. In particular, I realized the importance of networking and was able to effectively expand my learning resources by interacting with experts on platforms such as LinkedIn. In addition, I was able to increase learning efficiency and design PLE more systematically by utilizing the productivity tools and time management strategies recommended in the lecture.

  1. SWOT Analysis: It helped me set the strategic direction of digital identity by analyzing my own strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Content Strategy Development: Through the ’80/20 Content Law’ proposed in the course, 80% of social media content communicates useful information and value, and 20% is organized by promoting my brand.

By applying the storytelling skills I learned in the course, I improved my career and strengths, and reorganized my content to deliver consistent messages on social media and various platforms.

In addition, I have established a system to explore opportunities for collaboration, evaluate my digital identity periodically, and continuously develop through digital networking strategies.

This course has become an important class to strengthen my personal brand, providing practical tools and framework beyond simple theories.

Introduction to Personal Branding,by the University of Virginia

The MOOC on “Introduction to Personal Branding” by the University of Virginia was quite engaging and very practical. It gave a real depth to my understanding of personal branding and introduced new strategies for developing it effectively.

Following there is a personal overview of the most important points of the MOOC:

The MOOC highlights the fact that personal brands deal not only with self-promotion but also with creating an authentic representation of our values, skills, and passions.

But the most crucial lesson is that authenticity is the key to personal branding. Authenticity builds trust and deeper connections with others, which is important for our personal branding.

The course also highlighted a strategy that consists in using social networking sites with the 80/20 rule. This rule says, the 80% of outcomes often result from 20% of causes or inputs. When building a personal brand, it can be adapt to: 80% of our posts should seek to add value, while only 20% are used for self-promotion.This will ensure that the audience-focused aspects of the brand remain intact, but our achievements will not go unnoticed.

To finish, digital security was another important point. The more digital the things get, the more important protecting our online identity and personal data has become. From how to use secure passwords to staying ahead of online threats, this course truly empowered me with how to protect my brand and presence.

To sum up, I particularly enjoyed this MOOC and how it encouraged me to integrate its teachings into my Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

I will for sure add Coursera as a go-to learning app.

It reinforced the idea that personal branding is about showcasing unique skills to attract opportunities aligned with one’s talents and goals.

I strongly recommend this course to anybody willing to refine their personal brand for new opportunities !

About Bárbara Billón de Blas

I am Bárbara Billón, from Spain. Since I was little, I've always had a very special connection with the environment and with nature, a connection that now has become a passion. That's why I studied environmental engineering, and the reason I am currently studying this Master in Circular Economy.
I am eager to apply this expertise to make a positive, lasting impact on our world.

My Journey with UVA’s Personal Branding MOOC: Insights and Reflections

Personal branding has always felt like a buzzword—something important, but also vague. When I enrolled in the Introduction to Personal Branding MOOC by the University of Virginia, I didn’t fully know what to expect. It turned out to be a revelation, offering clear, actionable steps to create a meaningful and authentic digital presence. It wasn’t just about putting yourself out there; it was about how to do it intentionally.

A Fresh Perspective on Social Media: The 80/20 Rule
The 80/20 rule stood out to me as one of the most practical takeaways. It’s such a simple concept but incredibly powerful: focus your energy where it truly matters. In the context of social media, this means that a small fraction of your content or engagement drives most of the results. It made me rethink how I approach my posts on LinkedIn or interactions on Twitter—quality and purpose over quantity.
A Personality Test That Went Deeper
One of the more unexpected parts of the course was a personality test. I know, personality tests can sometimes feel like fluff, but this one genuinely helped me. It wasn’t just about finding out whether I’m introverted or extroverted. It helped me understand how my unique traits influence the way I present myself online. Knowing this, I felt more confident leaning into my natural strengths and not trying to imitate what “successful” personal branding looks like for others.
Guarding Privacy in a Hyperconnected World
Another topic that hit close to home was digital privacy. Let’s face it, we’re all online a lot, and sometimes it’s easy to forget how much we’re giving away. The course didn’t just teach me to secure my accounts—it taught me how to create boundaries. It felt like a reminder that being “authentic” doesn’t mean sharing every detail of your life. Privacy can coexist with transparency.

Reflections: More Than Just a Course
What surprised me the most about this MOOC was how personal it felt. It wasn’t about pushing you to build a “perfect” brand but encouraging you to craft one that’s you. I’ve already started implementing what I learned—updating my profiles, rethinking how I engage online, and even crafting a personal mission statement.

Greetings! I am Shouvik Bhadra from Bangladesh. I hold a bachelor's degree in Leather Products Engineering, specializing in chemistry and applied chemistry. Currently, I am pursuing my Erasmus Mundus Master's in Advanced Materials and Innovative Recycling. My academic and research interests focus on sustainable materials for energy applications, waste valorization, and recycling. Beyond academics, I am passionate about traveling, cooking, and discovering diverse culinary experiences around the world.

MOOC LEARNING OUTCOMES

The first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered by the University of Virginia was a comprehensive course on personal branding. This course was not only impressive but also enlightening, providing valuable insights into the process of building a personal digital brand. The course content helped on how to build a reputable identity in the digital world such as Twitter. It demonstrated that building a personal brand is indeed achievable, and it outlined the necessary steps to do so.

In the course, I was introduced to the concept of the 80/20 rule, a principle that is crucial for effectively navigating various social media platforms. This rule, often referred to as the Pareto Principle, suggests that 80% of outcomes come from 20% of causes. In the context of social media, it implies that a significant portion of engagement is driven by a small fraction of one’s content or efforts.

The course also included a personality test, which I found to be an enlightening experience. This test allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of my personal traits and how they influence my interactions in the digital world.

Furthermore, the course provided important insights into digital privacy, a topic of increasing relevance in today’s interconnected world. It emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information and maintaining privacy while interacting online. The knowledge and skills I acquired from this course significantly enhanced my digital identity and personal learning environment. I was able to refine my online presence and create a more impactful and authentic digital identity.

The second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered by the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) focused on the Circular Economy. This course provided a wealth of insights into how presumed waste can be transformed into reusable products, a key principle of the circular economy. One of the most striking examples discussed in the course was the approach taken by Philips, a multinational conglomerate. Philips has implemented a strategy of reacquiring all used products. This innovative practice not only reduces waste but also allows the company to repurpose and reuse components, thereby creating a closed-loop system.

The business model underlying this approach was explored in depth during the course. It was fascinating to see how such a model can be both economically viable and environmentally sustainable. The course demonstrated that with the right strategies and practices, businesses can contribute to a circular economy while also achieving their financial objectives.

Overall, the MOOC offered by TU Delft was a valuable resource for understanding the principles and practices of the circular economy.

MOOC I & PLE

Hello everyone,

I followed Introduction to Personal Branding MOOC on Coursera, and I really enjoyed this experience.

This course helped me to a get better understanding of new concepts and the way to devolop it such as:

  • Personal branding , what it needs, and the importance of it.
  • Taking advantage of the different social Media platforms with 80/20 rule.
  • Failure is a part of your journey,  how should you deal with it.
  • Reputation Management.
  • Your digital privacy and how to protect it.

I also took Myers-Briggs test but I think the questions were few and not enough to give the accurate answer to whether you are an introvert or extrovert.
The course focused on Twitter, but I think  if it focused on LinkedIn, for example, it would be more useful.

To link this with my personal learning environment PLE, it reminded me to add Coursera to my learning tools, it also made me consider new connection apps to separate my  personal life from the professional one. Speaking about Connection sector, This course made me aware of the importance of  the personal branding and use it to promote myself to get the special opportunity that matches my special competences and skills and this the goal of connection and showing what you have.

MOOC + PLE learning outcomes

The MOOC about personal branding was very enriching and enlighting. It gave me some new insight into the way of self-promotion for example. About the different channels that could be used but also that you should not use more than 2-3 platforms at the same time. Trying to update your profile or share information with your followers every week could make you stand out so much more. Especially the 80/20 rule is something I will try to remember and apply to my own personal branding. We should not be ashamed or think we have too much self-confidence when you post your accomplishments on social media. It is something you achieved and you should be proud of. I will try to use LinkedIn much more to share my personal achievements and academic developments.

In regards to the PLE, I did not get to know that many new platforms to use. I am pretty happy with my current PLE and added a few interesting new platforms to my objective PLE, but there are no major changes. Just the way how I will use these PLE platforms has changed a little bit after this MOOC course.

MOOC course

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to share that I’ve successfully completed my first MOOC course on personal branding from the University of Virginia. Attached above is my certificate to show this accomplishment.

As I progressed through the different modules, I realized that I’ve already implemented some of the tips suggested by the instructor, especially in updating my LinkedIn profile over the past months. However, I acknowledge that I could share more about my achievements, and that’s an area I plan to focus on in the future. While the idea of expressing my opinions on platforms like Twitter doesn’t appeal to me, I appreciate the concept and find the LinkedIn interface more suitable for my preferences.

The notion of having a personal board resonated with me. Reflecting on it, I realized I already have a similar support system in place, with some members changing over the years but maintaining a consistent core. I hadn’t thought of labeling them as a “personal board,” but it makes perfect sense.

Regarding personality tests, I’ve had mixed feelings about them. Every time I take one, even with a year between assessments, I get slightly different results. Although they generally fall within the same categories, the evolving nature of the outcomes is something I’ve noticed. Nevertheless, I acknowledge their value in helping to understand one’s abilities and how to best utilize them, especially in a team setting.

The course was well-designed and interesting. The instructor highlighted certain points that I’ll look into more deeply as I transition into my professional life next year.

Have a nice day!
