Retos Colaboración SMART MinEnergy (EN)

Precompetitive development of a safe and efficient air compressed energy storage system by reusing depleted/abandoned mine cavities.

This project is a response to the need to storage electric energy generated by renewable energy sources in order to increase its use, decrease the greenhouse emissions, develop a sustainable energetic future, assure the safety of the electric supply and enhance the efficiency of the electric system. To do this it is necessary to flatten the demand curve and to integrate renewable sources, by decreasing the use of fossil and pollutant fuels. Energy storage is a key factor for the widespread inclusion of renewable energies with a low load factor in the electricity system.

The SMART MinEnergy Project will develop a storage system by reusing abandoned mine cavities and based on the CAES technology. According to the following planification, it is possible to distinguish between these activities:

Activity 1. Definition of energy and subsurface framework.

Activity 2. CAES-tunnel design.

Activity 3. Tunnel insulation and lining system.

Activity 4. Pre-competitive CAES-tunnel prototype.

Activity 5. Testing and validation.

Project financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. State program for R&D&I focused on the challenges of society. State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2017-2020. Call for proposals 2019. (RTC2019-006874-3)
