LIFE SMART AgroMobility. Distributed biogas generation: sustainable energy and reduction of CO2 emissions.

The LIFE SMART AgroMobility project explores the options for transforming slurry (organic waste) into fertiliser and a source of energy, in order to develop a circular economy process by hybridising the agro-industrial and energy sectors. The first of these results is based on the experience of COPISO and the results achieved in the LIFE SMART Fertirrigation project.

In the novel approach of distributed biogas generation, the LIFE SMART AgroMobility consortium explores in activity C4 – business model – the technical-economic aspects of the biogas generation process in pig farms. In this case, we are working on a model that allows replicating the results of LIFE SMART AgroMobility, considering the 5 provinces with the highest pig population in the region of Castilla y León. Considering the most populated municipalities, it is possible to supply up to 100% of the energy through this distributed biogas generation approach.

Figure 1. Detail of 2 of the 5 provinces studied as a replication model for the LIFE SMART project.

The result indicates that considering the conditions of the LIFE SMART AgroMobility study, distributed biogas generation could account for 20.5% of the energy covered in the municipalities studied.
