March 22nd and 23rd 2021. The research team formed by the Santa Bárbara, Túneles y Geomecánica Foundation and UPM itself explored the options for implementing CAES technologies in abandoned coal mines. As an evolutionary process of the SMART MinEnergy project, the scaling of the prototype is considered and the real operating conditions in environments with pre-industrial dimensions are evaluated.
A unique experience, being able to enter abandoned mining spaces, where once an energy resource such as coal was exploited. It is exciting to consider these spaces as an option, to store renewable energy.

This initiative is fascinating—repurposing abandoned coal mines for CAES technology not only promotes renewable energy storage but also gives new life to historical industrial spaces. I wonder, what challenges did the team face regarding safety and infrastructure in these pre-industrial mining environments, and how scalable is this approach for wider implementation?
