Overtopping protection at Gibson Dam

Overtopping protection at Gibson Dam

The information about this case study has been provided by William Fiedler from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The present document is an extract of the original report of the Dam Safety Office about case histories of failures and nonfailures with back calculations prepared by Chuck Anderson, Caroline Mohorovic, Larry Mogck, Bitsy Cohen and Gregg Scott in December 1998. It summarizes the damages at Gibson Dam in 1964 after an overtopping of 1 m during an extreme storm. The document also includes the overtopping protection of the abutments added in 1980.
