MOOC : Personal Branding

The course Personal Branding in Coursera by University of Virginia was really interesting.

Some points I learned and will try to inculcate in real life:

  1. MBTI : Personality Type – Myers-Briggs : Helps to get to know oneself better, self reflection
  2. My 3 Words – Serves as a lighthouse to guide you on creating your personal brand and digital identity
  3. Digital Privacy – How to put controls and filter my online presence

Future wise, I would try to take some of the other courses related to branding, to develop more the idea and to align all my social media. Currently I am just using one for my professional presence which is LinkedIn, but maybe I can add another one to make it more holistic.

For my PLE, I believe I have all the required applications, it is a matter of refining and curating the content inside. For example, in my LinkedIn profile, I would follow the suggestion of updating at least twice a week/max 5 times a week. Currently, the updated PLE I posted prior already contains most of the things I need and would be helpful in promoting my personal brand.

Digital Identity : Julia Alonzo

The Digital Identity (DI) that I created in the Canvas below showcases the different aspects of my professional career. The main objective of this is to appear as an expert in the field of sustainability particularly in materials / packaging while maintaining an up to date network. Hopefully, the DI will be consistent across my socials as well as when I meet people in person. I want to be perceived as someone who can deliver clear communication in my field of interests.

My main collaborators are those I have worked with in the past, and in the present, the people I have met through EIT RawMaterials and the academe. Key activities are more for building social presence and keeping myself updated on news. The value proposition is marketing my capabilities and skills to interested industries.  Objectives for creating the DI is generally for growing my career and the other objectives follow this. Targeted groups include sustainability professionals, packaging experts, professors, Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) companies, universities, recycling industry, and peers. The channels are more for communication and are mainly email, people/network and socials. Cost incurred are more for networking events and course fees as well as time.

Personal Learning Environment : Julia Alonzo

Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is a way to self reflect and organize one’s multiple learning ecosystems. It promotes self-learning – taking ownership of one’s own development academically and professionally. It is also ever evolving and can be adapted as we age or as we change our career goals.

With this, below is my initial learning environment. I have organized them according to Research, Learning, Creativity or Content Creation, Organization / Storage and Communication. These aspects are the usual tools that I use.

With further reading, inputs and reviews, I improved the PLE to include new tools and a new section to illustrate the aspect of technical design. Being in a special scientific and engineering field, the tools to create technical content are also important.

The research aspect was made more modern and updated by incorporating AI tools such as Chatgpt and Research Rabbit.

Under content and creativity, I divided the tools into 2 groups: (1) writing/text content and (2) graphic design. Similarly, storage and organization are now grouped according to the function. For example, SharePoint and Teams are grouped together because they are more on collaborative tools.

Notion, is a new tool I included in the organization & storage section because it serves as an online productivity and task management application. Several colleagues recommended this to me and I would like to attempt to use it.

New learning platforms such as podcasts in spotify and the virtual/actual library of UPM are some of tools added in the learning section of the PLE.

The new section – technical & modeling have 3 main groups. First group is on data analysis tools such as Minitab, PowerBI, MatLab and so on. The next group is on technical drawing – Autocad, Visio and SketchUp. Lastly, life cycle analysis software such as OpenLCA that I already know, and additional tools that I would like to learn more about (ex. SimaPro and One Click LCA).

The over-all design was also improved to make it more contemporary and minimalist. I was also motivated to create a desktop set-up to imagine my PLE as a virtual workspace.

Julia Alonzo – Personal Reflection on The Professional Future

I regularly schedule time to reflect about my future prospects and think about small steps on how to accomplish them.

Starting work when I graduated back in 2014, I have been to many different technical departments and found myself enamored with packaging science. I have found my niche which synergizes my creativity and my engineering background. Due to this, I have set certain milestones in order to specialize in this field. After this master, I expect to work in more designing and research of sustainable packaging materials in order to help alleviate the issues surrounding plastic pollution and resource management. I want to have impactful work, and would like to have a big network of people and projects which pursue this common goal. I may try to get more certifications such as a Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) in the near future depending on the opportunity. Furthermore, I would like to apply new technologies such as additive manufacturing, machine learning, AI and big data to improve the over-all life cycle management of packaging in all of its applicable facets.

My goal is to become an expert in the sustainable packaging / recycling field and be a consultant that will handle several projects across different  industry sectors. And at the end, I plan to retire early and set up my own freelance company to help small to medium scale start-ups and to educate new professionals in designing sustainable packaging while travelling the world and/or while managing my small café.

Julia Alonzo – Personal Presentation

Hello! My name is Julia Alonzo and I’m from the Philippines.

Currently I live in Spain and I’m taking up my 2nd year Masters at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid under the Advanced Materials Innovative Recycling (AMIR) program. My 1st year was in Université de Bordeaux in France.

I’m passionate about circular economy and sustainability in various fields especially on packaging.

Prior to my masters I have worked several years in a global FMCG as a Packaging Materials Specialist which lead me to become invested in this area. My expertise is on managing projects from supplier qualification, specification design, safety and compliance, manufacturing, and print development. I also worked on key design for recycling initiatives during this time.

I graduated with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering in The University of the Philippines Diliman and I had my thesis as well as plant design related to natural fiber reinforced polymers and material recovery from waste tires. I had many co-curricular activities since I was part of organizations that were involved in managing events (outreach, symposiums, and conventions) across the country.

Throughout my education, I’ve been involved in Science and Technology even in my secondary school days in Philippine Science High School which had a big impact to my life. To this day I still remember this quote that our principal, Mrs. Fundador used to say every week.

“Be victors of circumstance”

For me, this means whatever life may bring, whatever circumstance you face, engage and do your best to overcome all obstacles – with the support of family, friends, colleagues and mentors.

In my available time, I like to travel and explore. I am a foodie and I have many hobbies such as photography and origami.
