THE MUEC WEEK – A comprehensive Circular Experience from Circular EELISA Community & CIRCLE project
| Date: January 20-24, 2024.
| Place: Various industry-leading locations in Spain.
| Participants: Graduate students of all disciplines and levels
Organized by the Circular EELISA Community & the CIRCLE Project
The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), in collaboration with the Circular EELISA Community and the CIRCLE project, is proud to introduce The MUEC Week. Taking place from January 20th to 24th, 2025, this immersive program is designed to offer students a hands-on experience in circular economy practices, bridging academic knowledge with real-world applications.
What is The MUEC Week?
The MUEC Week is part of the “Circular Experiences (CCEE)” subject within the Master in Circular Economy (MUEC) and the AMIR Master. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Circular EELISA Community and the CIRCLE project, both of which aim to integrate circular economy principles and foster social, civic, and green competences (SOCg competences) among technical university students across Europe.
The week-long program focuses on equipping students with practical skills, critical thinking, and environmental and social awareness, enabling them to become professionals prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. It is an intensive, immersive experience where participants delve into the professional dynamics of the circular economy.
Why Participate in The MUEC Week?
The challenges of our modern world demand professionals equipped with “competences for life”, including green, social, and citizenship skills. These competences provide students with tools to:
- Understand the environmental and social impacts of professional activities.
- Embrace circular economy principles in their work.
- Engage in problem-solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable decision-making.
The MUEC Week offers a “Circular Experience”, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. It goes beyond classroom learning to immerse participants in the professional landscape of the circular economy. This experience enhances students’ SOCg competences, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the circular transition with a strong socio-civic commitment.
What Will You Do During The MUEC Week?
Over the course of five days, students will participate in:
- Visits to industry-leading organizations and research institutions to observe circular economy practices in action.
- Interactive seminars and discussions led by professionals deeply involved in circular economy initiatives.
- Hands-on activities and reflections to strengthen competences such as problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration.
Planned Visits and Activities:
- Nfq Headquarters: A consulting company specializing in innovative solutions.
- Eduardo Torroja Institute of Construction Sciences (IETcc): Part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), focusing on sustainable construction materials and methods.
- El Cabril: A facility managed by ENRESA, dedicated to the storage of low, very low, and medium activity radioactive waste.
- NEDGIA Seminars: Sessions on circular economy practices in energy systems.
- SAINT-GOBAIN PLACO Factory: A plasterboard production plant integrating circular economy principles.
Key Learning Outcomes and EELISA Badges
By actively participating in The MUEC Week, students will earn EELISA badges linked to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Competence: Understanding local, national, and global challenges in achieving sustainability in infrastructure, industrialization, and consumption.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- Competence: Communicating the need for sustainable practices in production and consumption.
These badges reflect the competences developed during the program, emphasizing both technical knowledge and social responsibility.
Conclusion
The MUEC Week represents a unique opportunity to experience the principles of the circular economy in action. By combining theoretical learning, practical applications, and critical reflections, this program prepares students to tackle sustainability challenges in the professional world.
