Concentrating solar technologies

Techno-economic analysis of particle-based CSP plants

The next generation of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants aims to generate electricity at a cost of $0.05 per kWh. These plants employ advanced, efficient, and compact supercritical CO2 (sCO2) cycles to reduce electricity costs. Currently, three types of thermal carriers for the receiver are being explored: molten salt, particle, or gaseous. Among these, particle receivers are a promising option due to the stability and non-corrosive properties of solid particles at high temperatures, which align well with the requirements of sCO2 cycles. The TE4S group investigates whether particle-based CSP systems can meet the target electricity cost of $0.05 per kWh. This research line involves system modeling, encompassing both physical and cost aspects of various system components, to conduct a comprehensive techno-economic analysis.
