Eternal Sunshine of Love

The song played softly in the background, the haunting melody tugging at her heartstrings. Sophia sat by the window, her gaze fixed on the horizon where the sun was beginning to set. Its golden rays painted the sky in hues of orange and crimson, reminding her of the sunsets she once watched with him—Elliot, the love of her life. Time had passed, but the memories refused to fade.
She could still see his laughter in the flicker of candlelight, hear his voice in the rustle of leaves, and feel his warmth in the gentle touch of the wind. They had shared so much—a life full of dreams, whispered secrets, and stolen kisses beneath the stars. There were bad times too, days of doubt and sorrow, but they had fought through them together. Together, until destiny intervened. It had been five years since that fateful night when everything changed. Sophia had left, chasing an opportunity she thought was too good to pass up, promising to return soon. She didn’t know that “soon” would never come. An accident—brutal and sudden—took Elliot from the world before she could hold him one last time, before she could say goodbye.
Her return was marked by emptiness. The home they built together felt hollow, his absence weighing heavier than anything she could bear. For months, Sophia avoided the town, the streets they used to walk, the places they used to laugh. But avoidance did not erase the memories; they clung to her, as vivid as the day they were made. Now, as the song reached its crescendo, Sophia closed her eyes. The words seemed to echo her longing: a yearning for the past, a wish to rewrite the cruel script of fate. She had tried to move on, to find new purpose, but her heart was stubborn. It clung to the memories of Elliot, cherishing
them even in their pain. She picked up the old photo album on the table, flipping through its pages. Her fingers traced the edges of a picture of them, standing on the beach, smiling as the waves crashed behind them. In
that moment, she could almost hear his voice.
“You’ll always have me,” he had said once, pressing her hand to his chest. “Even if the world takes me away.” Tears welled in her eyes. “You’re still here,” she whispered, clutching the album to her chest. “In every sunset, every melody, every heartbeat.”
The song ended, and silence enveloped the room. Sophia stood and opened the window, letting the cool evening air wash over her. Somewhere, she believed, Elliot was watching her, his presence eternal in the moments they shared. The future was uncertain, but the past was hers to keep, a treasure that time or fate could never steal.
