Abstract
The design of gridshells always requires an iterative process between architecture and engineering with accurate adjustment of different parameters from early stages, which causes a great deal of effort. This paper presents five parametrized generative algorithms developed in Grasshopper® which integrate and provide, in real time, essential information for the architectural and structural design process of gridshells: a grid build tool based on the improved compass method for shape meshing; a bending evaluation tool to derive the total bending stresses and stress ratios according to the design code; an optimitazion tool to get the gridshell solution with the lowest value of maximun total stress; a graphic output tool to produce a 3D model which includes the laths thicknesses as drawing base for structural details; and a data output tool to provide lists of nodes and beams with the necessary data for an automatic implementation in a commercial structural analysis software.
