Abstract

This paper presents a new elastic timber gridshell that has been built to cover a wood store facility at the Timber Engineering Laboratory of the University of Santiago de Compostela. It is the first permanent elastic timber gridshell built in Spain and the first worldwide made with Eucalyptus globulus L. It comprises various novelties for timber gridshells such as a structural concept of long-shell supported only on its short sides and the use of a third direction of bent laths to provide in-plane shear stiffness to the shell. Several research and developments have been carried out by the authors for this new gridshell realization. The design and structural analysis processes, experimental research for the development of 24 m long laths without mechanical joints, structural details and information about the construction method are shown.
