µe-UPM Design Lab

The µe-UPM Design Lab represents the gathering of groups and researchers with accredited experience in the design and testing of integrated circuits in different areas of specialization. These units have successfully completed numerous integrated circuit designs, analog, digital, mixed signal, photonic, etc., which require a very broad catalog of design flows and manufacturing technologies. This design capacity is a fundamental asset as an instrument for to materialize the strategic autonomy in microelectronics pursued by Spain and the EU

In the current context of the relaunch of microelectronics in Europe, the priority topics that the µe-UPM Design Lab will work on include.

  • Digital, analog, and mixed electronic microcircuits
  • Open hardware and RISC V architectures
  • Radio frequency devices and circuits
  • Power devices
  • Integrated photonics
  • System on Chip
  • System in Package

Within these lines the objectives set are:

  • Promote the concept of heterogeneous integration in the design and testing of integrated circuits
  • Group capabilities to address projects of greater complexity and magnitude
  • Share the design and test resources available for better use of them.
  • Actively participate in the training of integrated circuit designers with specialization profiles in line with the needs of the industry.
  • Propose and obtain the necessary resources to launch complex projects.

The resources and facilities available for these activities consist of the laboratories, tools and design and analysis equipment of CEI, CEMDATIC, CITSEM and IPTC.

µe-UPM SemiFabs

The µe-UPM SemiFabs represents the union of all the infrastructures that operate at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid devoted to the manufacturing of semiconductor materials and devices. Essentially, these are four clean rooms, with a total aggregate area of  >1000 m2, and a center specialized in laser processing. These are teams with extensive experience in micro and optoelectronic manufacturing processes that offer in their catalog of capabilities a wide variety of high-performance devices and materials, including:

  • Radiofrequency devices
  • Power devices
  • Photovoltaic cells
  • Liquid crystals
  • Photodetectors
  • LEDs
  • Sensors
  • Dielectric, magnetic, and organic materials with technologies alike those of semiconductors
  • New semiconducting materials (Graphene, MoS2,…)

Within these lines, the objectives set are:

  • Group capabilities to address projects of greater complexity and magnitude
  • Share available manufacturing resources
  • Actively participate in the training of technologists with specialization profiles in line with the needs of the industry.
  • Propose and obtain the necessary resources to launch complex projects

The resources and facilities available for these activities consist of the manufacturing clean rooms of CEMDATIC, IES and ISOM, as well as the laboratories for the processing of semiconductor devices of the Laser Center.
