PhD defense of Prof. Javier Vaca Cabrero: “Development of sustainable ports through the Blue Economy and the use of emerging technology tools”

The overarching objective of Javier’s PhD work is to enhance the sustainability and operational efficiency of ports within the Blue Economy, focusing on the Spanish port system and its role in the European context. Javier has developed decision-making tools and frameworks that integrate socioeconomic and environmental dimensions. He uses emerging technologies to optimize port operations and management. Javier’s goal is to facilitate strategic planning that promotes balanced growth, reduces environmental impact, and strengthens port competitiveness.
Javier’s PhD research employs a variety of analytical methodologies: Bayesian networks (BNs) with data from 28 Spanish port authorities to identify key sustainability indicators for the Marine Renewable Energy sector; decision trees (CART algorithm) to prioritize Blue Economy sectors in Spain and Europe; Multi-Agent System (MAS) architecture for Ro-Ro terminal management; SWOT-CAME (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats—Correct, Adapt, Maintain, Explore) analysis, combined with Delphi Panel validation and the Business Observation Tool (BOT), to assess port sustainability and digital transformation readiness.
Javier’s PhD work contributes actionable insights and structured decision-making tools for port authorities, shipping companies, and policymakers. The developed models and frameworks address research gaps in port sustainability and digital transformation. The practical implications include guiding strategic investments in port infrastructure, adopting sustainable technologies, promoting emerging sectors like ocean energy, and supporting regional specialization within the Blue Economy.

Congratulations, Javier!
