Framework for Global Competence of Engineers

Output Identification IO1
Output Description The framework will define the global competence needed by engineers to communicate and work in environments characterised by cultural and social diversity. Also, it will define key elements characterising the competences, building on existing theory as well as on input from companies and organisations employing engineers. Each competence will include a title, a description of the content, a list of possible levels and of the steps and criteria required per each level. Competences will be defined in a way that ensures that they are possible to use both for self-assessment and for more rigorous assessment using the toolkit (IO2) by universities and companies.

Toolkit for assessing global competence of engineers, and the impact of training and international experience

Output Identification O2
Output Description The framework of global competence for engineers will be designed in a way that makes it easy to use for self-assessment. The toolkit will allow for easy, more rigorous, assessment of competence by HEIs and employers. Using the toolkit, HEIs and employers can both measure the level and profile of individuals’ competence, and assess the effect of interventions and experiences, e.g., training and international exchange or cooperation. Being able to identify strengths and weaknesses, more effective means of improving competence can be planned. On the personal level this could refer to focused training on specific competencies while at the organisational level this could translate to embedded mobility curricula or otherwise improved education. The toolkit will help validate international experience, thus promoting meaningful internationalisation and increase the capacity of professionalism of engineers to work at European/international level. Both the tools and the toolkit will be test-implemented at the partner universities. This will validate the usability of the concept, and it will also yield valuable data  that can be acted upon (always considering privacy relations at different countries).
