Javier Ferreiros received the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees with highest distinctions from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain, in 1990 and 1996, respectively. Since 1988, he is a member of the Speech Technology and Machine Learning Group at UPM, where he currently holds an Associate Professor position. He is IEEE member since 2002 and IEEE senior member since 2010.

The work leading to his Ph.D. was on improved strategies to model speech for automatic speech recognition systems using semicontinuous and continuous hidden Markov models.

From October 1999 to April 2000, he stayed at ICSI, Berkeley, CA, USA, as a Visiting Researcher working on new acoustic change detection strategies, the early stages of current speech diarization systems.

He has held university management positions as vice-director of the Electronics Engineering Department at UPM during the years 2004-2008 and vice-director of the Escuela Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación at UPM for academic planning and student affairs during the years 2008-2013.

His current research interests focus on spoken human-machine interaction systems showing expertise mainly on speech and speaker recognition, spoken language understanding, dialog management and response generation. He has been involved in 45 R&D competitive projects, being the responsible researcher in 8 of them and in 11 technology transfer contracts leading 5 as the main researcher. He is author of more than 130 scientific publications.
