F. Fernández-Martínez received the Telecommunication Engineering degree and the Ph.D. degree from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Madrid, Spain, in 2002 and 2008, respectively. He has undertaken several research stays as a visiting scientist and professor at international institutions, including the University of Lille 3 (France), the IDIAP Research Institute (Switzerland), Ulm University (Germany), and the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, where he was also affiliated with the Multimedia Processing Group (GPM).
Since September 2015, he has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at UPM and a member of the Speech Technology Group, currently attached to the Information Processing and Telecommunications Center (IPTC). He currently serves as Secretary of the Ph.D. Program in Electronic Engineering at UPM, contributing to doctoral program coordination, academic management, and quality assurance processes.
His research interests include natural language processing, speech and multimodal technologies, human–computer interaction, affective computing, social signal processing, multimedia information retrieval, and image and scene understanding.
He has participated in and coordinated numerous competitive research projects and publicly and privately funded research contracts, with a strong record of technology transfer and applied research. Recent representative examples include the coordination of the GSARI project with INDRA, focused on machine-learning-based methodologies for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data generation and analysis, including an Optical-to-SAR transformation system and data augmentation strategies for improved SAR-based target detection; acting as main investigator and responsible researcher for the TMClick project, developing integrated visual and phonetic analysis models for brand similarity estimation in the context of trademark protection and corporate identity management; and responsibility for the AI developments led by UPM in the European-funded project CIRCULAR – Smart Renting 4 All Eco-Products, including the design and validation of a proof of concept for an AI virtual assistant based on state-of-the-art NLP and transformer-based machine learning models in the green energy domain.
He has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications in international journals and conferences and holds five software patents.
