Equipment

The main equipment of the laboratory is described in the following paragraphs.

At the Center for Biomedical Technology or at the Materials Science Department, we have biology optical and fluorescence microscopes to acquire images of fixed or living samples, or to perform biophysical analyses. We have also a scanning electron microscope for high-resolution imaging of biological samples or of testing probes.

We have universal mechanical testing machines, some of them adapted for conducting in-vitro tests under immersion conditions with controlled temperature, load cells, cameras for optical measurement of lengths and displacements, and auxiliar devices for mechanical testing of soft materials of small biological materials.

Two atomic force microscopes and a variety of home-made auxiliary componets are used both por surface imaging, affinity analyses and mechanical studies of cell and tissue samples.

A micropipette-aspiration system and microfluidics devices are used in single-cell biophysical characterization, particularly to asess mechanical properties.

An electrospinnig device, straining-flow-spinnig device and a structural-fiber-sensing system are used to produce fibrilar or mat-like biomaterials. An activated-vapor-silanization (AVS) surface-functionalization device is used for new developments in surface biofunctionalization.

The laboratory includes a basic biochemical manipulation section, and various devices for microstructural analyses, including a FTIR-ATR device and a spectrophotometer.
