KICK-OFF MEETING (12th Dec 2022)

On the 12th of December, the kick-off meeting of the BIOELECTROGAS project took place at the ETSIMFMN of UPM in Madrid. Representants of all of the four participating UPM-Schools attended the kick-off meeting.

BIOELECTROGAS targets the combination of anaerobic biogas and green hydrogen to be directly used in conventional gas heating systems. From one hand, hydrogen is obtained from the electro-oxidation processes of wastewater and, on the other hand, the anaerobic process of the electrolyzed wastewater serves as feed for the production of biogas. Both treatments will reduce the bio-recalcitrant contamination load of the wastewater to enable its further biological treatment. The produced hydrogen will be fed to the biogas current improving its heat energy capacity making it suitable for being burnt in conventional systems. Furthermore, economic and environmental assessment methodologies will be taken into account to determine whether the project is in the public interest and what conditions need to be attached to its approval to mitigate adverse impacts.

ETSIDI MEETING (12th May 2023)

ETSIDI meeting for BIOELECTROGAS project.
On the 12th of May, the second meeting of the BIOELECTROGAS project took place at the ETSIDI of UPM in Madrid. Representants of all of the four participating UPM-Schools attended the meeting.

Raquel Núñez, PhD student of the BIOELECTROGAS project, presented the main results obtained from the electrolysis of the wastewater samples. She reported the synthesis, structural and microstructural characterization of the anode materials used in the electrochemical cell. The electrochemical performance of the prepared materials was also compared against the Ni/C commercial powder. The main results focused in the amount of green hydrogen produced and the study of some physicochemical parameters of the electrolyzed effluents, i. e. DQO, pH, conductivity, STS, DBO and TOC. These studies allowed us to obtain the first batch of conditioned wastewater solutions with optima characteristics to be introduced in the anaerobic reactors to produce biogas.
