Laura Gonzalo Calderón

Laura is an Architect. She is currently undertaking PhD studies in the Building Structures Programme of the Technical University of Madrid under the supervision of Dr. Almudena Majano Majano, with the thesis entitled Eucalyptus globulus laminated veneer lumber for structural use. In addition, she works as a structural architect, collaborating with numerous construction companies and architectural offices.

She studied Architecture at the University of Valladolid (MScArch 2004). During this period, she obtained a scholarship for 2 academic years at the Department of Building Construction of the School of Architecture and worked for half a year at the Valladolid City Hall. At the end of her studies, she started working in Zaragoza, carrying out architectural and urban planning projects. She developed a special interest in the design and calculation of structures, especially timber structures. Afterwards, she completed the Master in Building Structures at ETSAM (UPM) and the Master in Structural Timber Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) where she received the First Prize for the best timber engineering thesis.

Laura has participated in projects such as the Hotel Spa Aguas of Los Mallos in Murillo de Gállego, the church of the University of Francisco de Vitoria in Pozuelo de Alarcón, tourist and recreational complexes, private and public residential buildings, building rehabilitation, etc. In 2018 she received an Accesit in the XXIII Fernando García Mercadal Architecture Award for the Rehabilitation of a 5-storey building in Teruel. She has designed and calculated a multitude of timber structures, with light framing, CLT, mass timber or singular structures.

Between 2018 and 2020 she was Adjunt Professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Valladolid, where she taught Structures I and II, Soil Mechanics, Concrete, Steel and Timber Structures. He participated as a lecturer in the Timber Construction course organized by the Timber Construction Research Group (GICM) of the UPM.

She is currently involved in several research activities related to reciprocal structures, composite structures and structural reinforcements in wood.
