IN4SOC EXPERIENCE

Title:

Gender Equality and women in STEM

Organization:

Miskolc University

Short description:

When it comes to STEM, we have a long way to go to balance the equation for girls’ and women’s involvement. Girls are still being told that STEM is not for them, which may be slamming the door on STEM jobs as early as Grade 8. As a result, girls’ professional prospects and routes may be limited, especially as the economy and workplace adapt. And as a society, we may be missing out on future generations of innovators and problem solvers. It is not new that STEM is an area where girls and women are still sorely underrepresented. This underrepresentation does not happen all at once – it happens as girls and women drop off at every step along the path toward STEM education and career opportunities, something often referred to as the “leaky pipeline.”
Knowledge areas:

Women face challenges along the STEM career
SDGS:

SDG#5: Gender Equality
Competences:

Cross-Cultural interpersonal abilities and Multicultural awareness, ability to learn autonomously, communication skills, and Time management.
About the experience:

Following my experience from the SOC internship, and the research/contributions of my mentor on the selected SDG, I have been able to gain (or improve) on competencies that are aligned to the specific sets of competencies listed for the IN4SOC pilot program. Personal competencies: time management, information management, coping with complex issues, identification of my capacities, ability to reflect critically, stress management and the ability to express my own viewpoint, are personal competencies I have developed or improved during this program. Social competencies: Teamwork is one vital skill that was greatly improved during the course of this work, having worked with various teams to get to the conclusion of my topic as reported above. Empathy, assertiveness, effective communication, are also other social skills developed during this work. Learning to learn competencies: ability to organize and persevere in learning, ability to learn autonomously, ability to identify and set goals, self-motivation, and ability to handle obstacles are skills I have further developed and will be useful in my future career. It is important that these skills (amongst many others) be effectively developed amongst students so as to create an atmosphere where sensitive issues such as gender equality can be discussed, increase awareness on the subject towards finding a lasting solution
