About me

Gonzalo Rubio

I’m an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) at the Department of Applied Mathematics at the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (ETSIAE-UPM). I received my Bachelor’s in Aeronautic Engineering in 2009 and my Master’s in Aerospace Engineering in 2011, both from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. After that, I joined the department as a doctoral researcher with a UPM studentship, focusing my PhD on error estimation and mesh adaptation in Discontinuous Galerkin methods, particularly for optimizing CFD simulations. I earned my PhD in Aerospace Engineering in 2015, publishing 8 papers along the way and receiving the extraordinary PhD award.

Over the years, I’ve published more than 50 papers in areas like machine learning, fluid dynamics, and numerical simulation, with 39 of those appearing in Q1 journals. My Google Scholar h-index is 15 over the last five years. My research interests mainly focus on fluid dynamics (aerodynamics, multiphase flow, and flow in porous media) and developing numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially high-order spectral Galerkin and Discontinuous Galerkin methods. I also work on error estimation and hp-adaptation.

I’m the lead developer of the open-source high-order CFD project Horses3D. I’ve been the principal investigator for projects with companies like REPSOL and AIRBUS, as well as national projects like SIMOPAIR. Currently, I’m leading the national project DeepCFD and two European projects, HERFUSE and ROSAS, which focus on machine learning and aerodynamic simulation applied to fluid mechanics.
