Why is it Important?

The rural area presents great challenges and opportunities since it is characterized by concentrating high levels of poverty, particularly in small-scale farming families. Agroforestry, as a dynamic and ecological management system for natural resources, diversifies and sustains production in order to increase economic, social and environmental benefits, based on a sustainable development approach.

Increased production, productivity and product diversity can help improve the health and nutrition of the poor in rural areas. It can also provide a wide variety of environmental services, such as improving soil fertility, restoring degraded lands, improving water conservation, or limiting the development of pests and soil erosion.

  • Both the existence of the information and the timely and useful access of stakeholders at the micro-meso-macro level (and their interconnections) are evaluated for risk management purposes.
  • Gaps in information and access tools for key stakeholders (small farmers, commercial farmers, microfinance institutions, value chain, private investors, donors, and governments) are assessed and, where possible, compared across countries.
  • Special emphasis is placed on two groups of ARM-IS users: at the micro level, the usefulness and timely access of small producers to information for Agricultural Risk Management purposes; at the macro level, utility and access for government and policy makers. The study will also evaluate the identification of external (regional) and internal (national) factors that impact the performance of the information system..
  •  The approach is holistic, covering all sources of risks in agriculture, in particular climate, production, prices, health and politics risks  of plants, animals and people.
  • The study covers information at different levels of aggregation: from information at the farm or individual household level, to information at the country level.
  • The report will assess the availability and accessibility of information on agricultural risk management in the seven countries, developing and using appropriate indicators or methodologies to compare the situation within them and with other countries.
  • The main focus of the informative assessment will be the existence and convenient access to information on agricultural risks in each country.
  • Information Systems will be useful for agricultural risk management purposes to the extent that they provide information on variability over time, trends of shocks and changes, or at least, allow them to be estimated.
  • The project seeks the self-construction of a habitable place with 206 housing solutions, equipment and the installation of a workshop for the production of small construction elements, generating 35 jobs.
