Adaptative silviculture of complex pine stands: challenges for forest persistence

Madrid (Spain), 20-22 April 2027

Welcome to the Joint IUFRO Meeting Adaptive silviculture of complex pine stands: challenges for forest persistence, to be celebrated in Madrid between 20th and 22nd April 2027.

This meeting is co-organized by the following IUFRO Research Groups and the Silviculture group of the Spanish Society of Forest Sciences (Sociedad Española de Ciencias Forestales (SECF)

1.01.10. Ecology and silviculture of pine

1.01.12. Silviculture and ungulates

1.04.00. Agroforestry

1.09.00. Ecology and silviculture of mixed stands

The venue

The meeting will take place in the beautiful city of Madrid (Spain), a vibrant city of over 5 million inhabitants with plenty of cultural and historical places to visit. The program will not only include research activities but also cultural activities to enjoy the city in group but also by your own.

Scientific activities will take place in the Higher Technical School of Forestry and Natural Environment Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), located in the University City of Madrid (https://web.montes.upm.es/). This institution is the most ancient academic institution linked with forest sciences in Spain, with more than 175 years of history after being founded in 1848 in the city of Villaviciosa de Odón. After being from 1870 to 1914 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, since the latter the School is located in Madrid, and from 1945 in its current location in the University City (Calle José Antonio Novais, 10, 28040 Madrid).

Apart from teaching and research facilities, the School has a 10 hectares arboretum with representations of mediterranean flora and exotic species, used for educational and recreational purposes. Our intention is to look into the use of these open spaces during the meeting to improve the overall experience of the assistants.

Meeting purposes and sessions

Pure and mixed pine stands are facing new challenges due to the impacts of climate change, influencing management of these stands and multifunctionality. The meeting will be focus on adaptive management of these stands, taking into account not only climatic challenges, but also those related with browsing and non-wooded productions associated with pine forests.

Thematic Sessions

  1. Vulnerability and adaptive capacity of pine forests
  2. Adaptive management of pure and mixed pine stands
  3. Non native pine species as alternative management strategy
  4. Browsing as a challenge to forest regeneration in pure and mixed pine stands
  5. Agroforestry with pine species
