The Basics of Construction Products in a Circular Economy: from End-of-Life Products to Secondary Raw Materials. November 2018.

The objective of the course is to increase the awareness of students on the choices for a more circular economy in the construction sector. Enhance the student’s transversal skills to actively learn, participate and contribute in an interdisciplinary context.

Programme:

  • Circular Economy and actions to fight climate change
  • Construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the European Union. Framework, Directives, Communications, etc.
  • Design and building deconstruction for an efficient recovery of products
  • Climate‐change impacts and mitigation measures in the construction sector
  • Secondary materials characterization and quality criteria
  • Students develop a coursework on circular economy applied to construction products, which ends with an infographic and an oral defence summarizing the results

Prerequisites:

  • Interest in more sustainable approaches
  • General knowledge of the construction sector
  • Participative attitude

The objective of the course is to increase the awareness of students of the choices for a more circular economy in the construction sector.

Programme:

  • Construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the European  Union. Framework, Directives, Communications, etc.
  • Building demolition and decontamination as a requirement for an efficient recovery of products 
  • Waste fractions, sources, and existing recycling technology
  • Business models for the end-of-life of construction products 
  • CDW characterization
  • Secondary materials characterization and quality criteria

Prerequisites:

  • Interest in more sustainable approaches
  • General knowledge of the construction sector
  • Participative attitude
